In 2002, amidst a bulky, advertising-laden digital television experience, programmer Isaac Richards took matters into his own hands -- he began to build his own digital video recorder system from scratch.
Now known as the MythTV project ( http://www.mythtv.com/ ), Richards's effort to create DVR systems from commonly available computer components and the Linux open-source operating system, is gaining traction on the Internet.
Philips has begun pitching its entry into the Media Centre PC arena to UK consumers, touting its MPC9350i as the ultimate home entertainment rig, offering music and movie playback, twin TV tuners, hard disk-based PVR functionality, wireless internet access and more.

The Our Room PC (ORPC) is an amalgamation of a PC, DVD player, DVD recorder, personal video recorder, digital photo frame, high-end stereo, game console and more. This one-stop server delivers digital entertainment to every room. With an Intel P4 HT processor as its heart, a SATA HDD and high-speed 802.11a/b/g WiFi connectivity, speed isn%u2019t an issue. The ORPC supports 24-bit audio and a host of industry formats. Expect to see the ORPC hit the streets before April. Pricing details are unavailable as at press time.

Honest, which has no relation to Sling Media, the creator of the SlingBox, has developed MY-IPTV Anywhere, a software package that uses either an existing PC or Media Center PC to reroute a television feed. The $99.95 software package will be available at the end of April, Honest Tech executives said.
Honest had previously developed a Media Center-like plugin that would allow users to watch and record programs on their PC. When Microsoft actually developed and released Media Center, Honest had to come up with additional enhancements to keep the company ahead of the game, according to Sonny Choi, the customer service and engineering manager for Honest.
The XPC X100 is around the size of a compact scanner. Equipped with Intel's latest Core Duo mobile processor, ATI's Mobility Radeon X1600 onboard graphics accelerator with DVI/TV out and multi-channel digital audio with SPDIF, the XPC System X100 will certainly offer great performance. In addition, this preliminary specification also features a 250GB hard drive, 512MB of dual-channel DDR 2 SDRAM, Gigabit LAN, Wireless LAN, a four-in-one card reader, 4x USB ports and Firewire.
Though the old one worked on macs with a slight tweak, TiVo has released an official updated desktop client that is compatible with OS 10.4: TiVo Desktop for Mac v1.9.2
