The 86 Rules of Boozing

1. If you owe someone money, always pay them back in a bar. Preferably during happy hour.

2. Always toast before doing a shot.

3. Whoever buys the shot gets the first chance to offer a toast.

4. Change your toast at least once a month.

5. Buying someone a drink is five times better than a handshake.

You get the picture!

The nuclear information project:: Soviet/Russian nuclear submarine patrols

Russian Nuclear Submarine Patrols

The Russian nuclear submarine force is far less active today than during the Cold War. Since 1984, according to information obtained from the U.S. Navy, the annual number of extended patrols performed by strategic nuclear submarines and nuclear-powered attack submarines has dropped from more than 230 in 1984 to less than 10 today.Delta IV Class Ballistic Missile Submarine

Interestingly, the drop occurred well before the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Between 1984 and 1989 (the year the Berlin Wall fell), the annual number of patrols plunged to less than half its peak patrol level in 1984.

After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the annual number of patrols continued to decline until it reached its lowest level in 2001 with only two patrols accomplished. 2002 was particularly noteworthy because it was the first time the Russian Navy did not send any strategic submarines on extended deterrent patrols.

Thanks Stace!

Thagomizer - The Word

PALAEONTOLOGISTS don't get many chances to name new bones. Evolution uses the same bones over and over again, altering their shape and purpose but preserving their basic nature, so anatomists simply use the same old terms to describe them. A humerus is a humerus, whether it's in a chicken wing, a walrus flipper, the massive front leg of a brachiosaurus or our own upper arm. A few animals evolve bones that look different enough to earn their own distinct name, like the thagomizer, the fearful-looking cluster of spikes on the end of a stegosaur's tail.

Now this end is called the thagomizer, after the late Thag Simmons. The name comes from Gary Larson's cartoon series, The Far Side, rather than some bygone anatomist. Dinosaurs and cavemen were among Larson's favourite characters, and he often put both in the same frame, fully aware of the anachronism. In 1982, he drew a caveman "professor" lecturing to a class, pointing to a drawing of the cluster.

There is also a good Wikipedia entry about it too.

The Art of the Shiv

A shiv is a weapon crafted from the limited resources of a prisoner’s closed world. Crudely constructed from such things as spoons, shoelaces and upholstery tacks, shivs lie somewhere between the graceful and the grotesque. They’re primitive, too — like outsider art, but produced deep on the inside.
